TEXT: PSALM 7:10-17
TOPIC: MY SHIELD IS GOD MOST HIGH
In ancient times, shields were large protective gear used to fend off swords, arrows and spears of enemies during battle. David asks the Lord to symbolically be his own shield, whose efficacy is guaranteed.
To be under God’s shield is to have God as your protector and to trust that He will look out for you and safeguard your life in the battles of this life.
David might have remembered his encounter with the mighty Goliath, who trusted in his military experience and intimidating physique.
The Bible tells us that David “took his staff in his hands, chose five smooth stones from the streams, put them in the pouch of the shepherd’s bag and with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David…he said, “Am I a dog that you came to me with sticks?”
David said; “you come to me with sword and spear and javelin but I come against you in the name of the LORD almighty, the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defied…all those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spears that the LORD saves” (1 Samuel 17:40-51).
QUESTION
God was David’s shield; what is yours?
PRAYER
I confess that there are times I relied on the weapons of the flesh for my protection. Forgive me for doing so, dear Lord, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
