In Jewish law, the temple tax is collected from every male twenty years old and above for the upkeep of the temple. Jesus asked Peter what he thinks about this.
Peter answered from others. Jesus said that if it is from others, then the disciples are exempted.
But this didn’t go down well with the Jews: They felt His response was offensive. Brethren, we Christians offend other people in many ways (vs. 25).
Some of those ways are necessary while others are not. The gospel itself is offensive.
Why? This is because it tells people that they are sinners in need of salvation. So, whenever we preach the gospel, we ‘offend’ our listeners.
QUESTION
Are we still preaching Christ’s core gospel, which is offensive or are we preaching another gospel that tickles the ears of the listeners?
PRAYER
Help us, dear Lord, to continually preach the offensive and undiluted gospel in this generation and at all times, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
