Overcoming Worry through God’s Presence

Overcoming Worry through God’s Presence

Text: Matthew 6:31–33

Aim:

To inspire Believers to embrace the peace that comes from living daily in God’s presence.

Introduction

Worry is anxious concern about yesterday’s failure, today’s needs and future uncertainties. Many people spend hours worrying about bills, jobs, health, greener pastures, impressing people, family, acceptance, etc. It drains joy, steals sleep and disturbs peace of mind. Jesus, in Matthew 6, teaches that worry adds nothing meaningful to life but burdens the heart.

The presence of God assures us that whether our needs are met or not, we can enjoy peace. Situations and people’s approval and or disapproval no longer determine the peace of heart you enjoy. But, to make God’s presence your priority, you must live for His kingdom purpose because no one lives for himself/ herself, and fulfil God’s kingdom purpose.

Peace of mind is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of God in the midst of it. When God is present, storms may rage, but your heart stays calm (Mark 4:39). This study will help us discover how God’s presence is the believer’s greatest weapon against worry.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think people find it easier to worry than to trust God?
  2. In your own words, how is worry different from planning responsibly?
  3. How does the awareness of God’s presence help you handle difficult situations? Matt 14:29-31
  4. What is the benefit of seeking God’s kingdom, and how does that help you overcome worries of life? Matt. 6:33
  5. What practical step will you start taking this week to replace worry with God’s peace? Joshua 1:8, Psalm 77:11–12, Phil. 4:6

Reflection

When we focus on seeking God’s Kingdom, He focuses on meeting our needs.

Conclusion

Beloved, worry drains your strength, steals your joy, and clouds your peace. Jesus did not promise a storm-free life, but He promised a stormproof presence—and in that presence, fear and anxiety lose their grip.

If the God of heaven feeds the birds and clothes the lilies in splendour, will He not much more care for you, His beloved child? (Matt. 6:26–30). Here lies the secret: seek Him first. Fix your eyes on His Kingdom, and watch Him fix His eyes on your needs. In His presence, peace is not an option—it is your inheritance.

Memory verse

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

(Phil. 4:6 NIV)
