MINUTES OF THE 44th CHURCH CONGRESS HELD ON SUNDAY, 13TH OCTOBER 2024 IN THE CHURCH AUDITORIUM
1.0 COMMENCEMENT: The meeting commenced at 11:03 AM with an opening prayer led by Pastor Nuhu Gbedaba, who also chaired the session in the absence of the Chairman, who was on leave. In his opening remarks, Pastor Gbedaba encouraged members to be intentional and progressive in their commitment to the church family, serving wholeheartedly as unto the Lord rather than unto men. He further emphasised the need for love and unity to guide all actions that contribute to the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth.
2.0 ATTENDANCE: AS ATTACHED
3.0 READING AND ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES OF THE 43rd CONGRESS
The Secretary then read the minutes of the previous meeting. The Chairman advised members to forward any corrections to the Secretary, after which necessary amendments were made. A motion for adoption was moved by Chief Victor Ayose and seconded by Mrs. Tabitha Dabo.
4.0 MATTERS ARISING
4.1. ZONAL FELLOWSHIP: Feedback from the Zonal Fellowship Leaders indicated that reports from the Zonal Fellowship have been very encouraging. Members were urged to continue visiting one another to provide mutual support and were encouraged to actively participate in the Zonal Fellowship to foster communal growth and strengthen relationships within their various neighbourhoods.
4.2. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: It was also noted that the discipleship programme is ongoing; however, attendance from some zones has declined, and a few have stopped participating altogether. Members were encouraged to take part in the discipleship sessions, as active involvement is vital for their personal spiritual growth and the overall growth of the church.
4.3. EVANGELISM: An update on the various mission fields was presented. The work in Takushara has progressed appreciably, and the Board is considering providing support for the repair of the Uke church roof.
4.4 BUILDING: The Church is exploring the option of acquiring the land behind the Church from the Park and Recreation. It was also suggested that the church begins the usage.
4.5 WORSHIP: It was further noted that the microphone remains a challenge; however, members were assured that efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
4.6 COOPERATIVE: The AGM is still pending
4.7 Pastor’s Children School fees: Pastor Nuhu Gbedaba expressed heartfelt appreciation to members for their continuous support, particularly in the area of providing financial assistance for the payment of school fees and scholarships for the ministers’ children. He commended the congregation for their generosity and commitment, noting that such support not only eases the financial burden on the ministers’ families but also contributes significantly to the children’s education and future. He further encouraged members to continue in this spirit of love and service, as it strengthens the church community and reflects true Christian stewardship.
4.8 Leadership Tussle in the Children’s School: The matter has been resolved, and Pastor Joseph Gyuku has been relieved of his duties. Consequently, the status quo has been restored, and normal operations have resumed.
5.0 AGENDA
5.1 Prayer Meeting: Pastor Nuhu Gbedaba urged members to be more intentional and committed in their participation in church-organized prayer programmes as well as the zonal prayer meetings. He emphasised that prayer is a vital pillar of spiritual growth, collective strength, and the advancement of God’s work in the church. Pastor Gbedaba reminded the congregation that their active involvement in these gatherings not only deepens their personal relationship with God but also fosters unity, builds faith, and empowers the church to fulfil its mission more effectively.
5.2 FEEDBACK:
5.3 Clashes of Programmes: It was observed that there have been frequent clashes between scheduled church programmes and zonal fellowship meetings, particularly on Wednesdays. These overlaps have, at times, resulted in disruptions, with some fellowship groups unable to meet for up to three consecutive weeks due to impromptu or emergency church activities.
The Board was encouraged to explore more flexible scheduling options to minimise these conflicts, as they negatively affect attendance and participation. It was suggested that such impromptu programmes could, where possible, be scheduled for Sunday evenings instead, to avoid disrupting the regular fellowship meetings.
Elder David Aye further remarked that the zonal fellowship prayer meetings should not be regarded as a substitute for the regular Wednesday church prayer meetings. It was clarified that the purpose of the zonal fellowship is to bring prayer closer to members within their neighbourhoods, while the first Wednesday of each month remains designated for the collective gathering at the church for the “Praise and Plea Night.”
5.4 Focus on the PP Night: It was observed that the Praise and Plea (PP) Night should remain focused on its primary purpose as a time dedicated to praise and prayer rather than taking the form of a regular sermon service. Members emphasised that the programme should be structured to address pressing and prevailing issues through concentrated worship and intercession. The time allocated for praise, worship, and prayer should therefore be prioritised, while the sharing of the Word should serve mainly to ignite faith, stir a deeper desire to pray, and provide understanding, rather than to deliver a full sermon.
5.5 Thanksgiving and Offering: A clarification was provided regarding the modalities for collecting offerings during services. It was agreed that the women would pass the offering baskets around for the general offering, while members would dance forward to present their Kingdom Investment Offering. Concerning thanksgiving offerings, it was emphasised that a crowded altar should be avoided. Members are to remain and stand where they are seated, and those who wish to offer additional support should also do so from their positions. Everyone will then come forward in an orderly manner to present their thanksgiving offerings.
5.6 Time Management: In order to ensure proper time management during meetings and programmes, it was suggested that a timer be provided to help speakers and participants make effective use of the time allocated to them.
5.7 Leakage from the Church Roof: Sister Beersheba Gyet drew the attention of the congregation to a few areas of the roof where leakages were observed. The Works Team responded that they were already aware of the issue and assured members that plans are well underway to address and fix the problem promptly.
5.8 Seating Arrangement: Sister Beersheba Gyet also shared a concern raised by the Ushering Unit regarding members’ preference for sitting at the back of the church despite the availability of many empty seats at the front. In response, Pastor Nuhu Gbedaba admonished members to cooperate with the ushers and follow their instructions, as they are positioned to ensure order and a smooth flow of the service. He further emphasised that it is inappropriate for latecomers to walk to the front during the service, as this causes unnecessary distractions and disrupts the worship atmosphere.
5.9 First Services attendants missing out of Special programmes: An observation was made that members who attend the first service often miss out on special programmes. As a result, it was suggested that such programmes be organised as joint services to ensure full participation by all members. Pastor Nuhu Gbedaba, however, clarified that consistently holding joint services could affect the regular first service schedule. He therefore advised that the current structure be maintained while efforts are made to address and work out the grey areas to ensure that no group is left out.
5.10 Dove Brethren: A concern was raised that members of the Board and their wives should intentionally build stronger relationships with the Dove Brethren by encouraging them, offering support, and praying for them. This gesture, it was noted, would foster a greater sense of belonging, strengthen unity within the church, and motivate the Dove Brethren in their spiritual growth and service.
5.11 Orderliness during Holy Communion Services: Brother Abati Ishaya raised a concern regarding individuals who arrive late and cause disruptions during Holy Communion services. He emphasised the need for members to arrive on time in order to preserve the solemnity and reverence of the service and to minimise distractions during this sacred observance.
5.12 Welfare: Chief Victor Ayose expressed his appreciation to the church for the efforts and initiatives undertaken around welfare. He commended the progress made so far but also admonished that there is a need to do even more, given the prevailing economic realities. He emphasised that increased support would further strengthen the church community and ensure that the needs of vulnerable members are adequately met.
5.13 Closing Remarks: Pst Nuhu Gbadeba shared with the congress message from the Senior Minister’s message of encouragement. The emphasis was on doing the work of the Lord with commitment and dedication, and that love and service should be a great outlook of what we do for God. He further appreciated the congress and encouraged to keep loving Jesus.
6.0 Adjournment: The motion for adjournment was moved by Eld Silas Lamela and seconded by Eld James Jock.
7.0 Closing Prayer: The Closing prayer was said by Eld Nathaniel Wodi at about 12:50 pm.
