Scripture focus: Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8, Romans 10:14-15
Introduction
When Jesus gave the Great Commission, He gave a command without limiting the method. He commissioned a mission, not a specific medium. The early church understood this deeply. They consistently leveraged the fastest, widest-reaching tools of their day, such as Roman roads, the common Greek language, and written letters carried by couriers, to spread the Gospel. Today, we are called to bring that same strategic urgency to the tools of our generation.
Key ideas
The mandate never changes, but the method can
- Unchanging call: The command to "go" in Matthew 28:19 is not tied to a single method of travel or communication.
- Historical precedent: The Apostle Paul used epistles, the "social media" of his day, to teach, correct, and encourage churches he could not visit in person.
Every generation stewards its own tools
- The legacy of innovation: The Church has always adapted. The printing press unlocked mass Bible distribution; radio and TV transmitted global crusades.
- Our present reality: Today, our tools are smartphones, social media, live-streaming, and podcasts. As 1 Corinthians 9:22 reminds us, we must become all things to all people, using all possible means to save some.
Reach demands responsibility
- Gospel accountability: With massive reach comes massive responsibility. Colossians 4:5-6 instructs us to walk in wisdom toward outsiders and let our speech always be full of grace.
- Proactive presence: Digital media can build up or tear down. While we must guard against vanity and distraction, we must also recognize that a single shared post, testimony video, or WhatsApp status can reach people a traditional Sunday sermon never will.
Discussion questions
- If the Apostle Paul had access to a smartphone and a social media account today, how do you think he would have used them for the ministry?
- What are the specific tools and platforms available to us today that the early church lacked, and how do they change our ability to fulfil Acts 1:8?
- What is stopping many believers from using their phones and platforms for the Gospel with the same consistency they use them for everyday life?
- Look at Colossians 4:5-6. What are the unique dangers or temptations (such as argumentativeness, vanity, or distraction) that we must avoid when sharing our faith online?
- What is one specific fear or hesitation you experience when thinking about sharing your faith or Christian content in a digital space?
Conclusion
It is important to trust God for boldness, wisdom, and grace in using modern tools for the Great Commission. We also need to use our voices and available media platforms to reflect our light and share the Gospel with a world in need.

For everyone
- Join five to ten minutes early so your sound and camera are ready before we begin.
- Rename yourself to your full name from the participants list, so the leader can greet you.
- Mute your microphone when you are not speaking. Unmute to answer, then mute again.

- Use earphones or headphones if you can, and find a quiet place.

For the leader
- Open the meeting early and share each Bible passage on screen as you read it.
- Ask a co-host to watch the chat, welcome latecomers and mute noisy lines.
- Use breakout rooms for the discussion when the group is larger than about eight, then bring everyone back to share.
- Leave a few seconds of quiet after each question. People on a call need longer to begin speaking.
- Close in prayer, and remind everyone that the same link works every Tuesday.
